BRINGING HEALTHCARE TO THE CREEKS OF NIGER DELTA
The essence of providing affordable healthcare in impacted communities in the Niger delta after the militancy era has been brought to the front burner in the last couple of weeks with expectations from communities to be availed of such rare opportunity in the future. The initiative, a joint partnership venture between RAHI Medical Outreach and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs is designed to address the health needs of the people of the region as part of the re- integration process of the Amnesty programme. This is predicated upon the fact that most health centers in these communities lack medical personnel and equipment hence the need to reach out to them through free medical services.
The free medical mission billed for 10 selected communities across the region took off at Sabagreia and Environs in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government, then to Biugbene/Trofani and Environs in Sagbama Local Government Area, both in Bayelsa State and currently in Agoloma/Patani and environs Patani Local Government of Delta State.
The free medical outreach tagged “Across the creeks with healthcare” has so far recorded a lot of medical intervention in Dental, Ophthalmic and outpatients units with minor and major surgeries performed successfully at the same time. Several medical conditions peculiar to the communities visited as it affects children, adults and aged were treated and drugs prescribed and given out to the patients. Reading glasses were also given out to the visually impaired while dental prosthesis were fabricated alongside.
The RAHI Medical team at the commencement of each medical mission embarked on courtesy visits to the traditional rulers of the designated communities to intimate them officially of their mission. They were equally presented with commendation and appreciation letters for imparting into the people with standard medical services. The beneficiaries in turn were full of appreciation to the organizers for reaching out to them with exceptional show of love and putting a smile on their faces.
The medical mission continues with greater expectation for an efficient and sustainable healthcare for the people of the region as it moves from community to community across the Niger Delta.
