RAHI/NDDC MEDICAL AND RELIEF MATERIAL PROGRAMME :OPOBO TOWN FLAG OFF

The emergency relief programme for impacted communities in Niger Delta courtesy of RAHI Medical Outreach/NDDC partnership has flagged off the weeklong Opobo town emergency relief programme amidst a large turn-out of residents of the riverine community in Opobo/Nkoro LGA of Rivers State.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Dr Chris Ekiyor, President/Founder RAHI Medical Outreach, said the programme was part of RAHI’s primary assignment of providing healthcare for people of rural Africa being mindful of the difficult terrain from the upland faced by the people of Opobo town. He said the free medical mission will deal with issues of malaria, typhoid, eye, de-worming of children and general out-patient in addition to distribution of food and materials to the people.

In her speech, the Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Mrs Ibim Semenatiri said the focus of NDDC is to move into Niger Delta communities with a development approach that will better the lot of the people. She used the opportunity to highlight some of her achievements since her appointment while recalling the hardship of the people of Opobo and environs as a result the difficult terrain and the effect of oil exploration in the area. This, she said gave rise to the partnership with RAHI Medical Outreach to provide medical services and food items to the people as part of the health and food services mandate of NDDC. She equally commended the RAHI team for the organization and commitment exhibited at the programme.

The ceremony also featured the de-worning of some children and distribution of food and other material by Mrs Semenatiri and Dr Ekiyor. A demonstration of how to use insecticide treated mosquito nets was also carried out at the ceremony.

Most residents including women, children and aged were attended to by the medical team. In the entourage of the NDDC boss was Dr George Uzowanne, the Deputy Director, Education and health services and other staff of the commission.

The weeklong programme continues with much expectation from the people.
