BACKGROUND

Following the activities of militants in Niger Delta and military invasion of Kurutie and Oporoza communities in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, leading to life threating impact, our organization deemed it necessary to partner with NDDC in alleviating the sufferings of the affected communities.

Since 2008, our organization has built a long term partnership with NDDC in emergency and disaster response activities in the Niger Delta Region.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES       

  1. Provide medicine and medical consumables to meet the needs of the targeted populations
  2. Carry out free medical outreaches in the impacted communities of Oporoza and Kurutie
  3. Supporting the food and nutrition needs of the communities
  4. Supporting the physical/medical needs of the communities
  5. Referral of patients needing advanced care to tertiary health institutions
  6. Donation of drugs and surgical consumables to the health centres in the communities.

SUCCESS STORY (IES) HIGHLIGHTING IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

  • A 72 years old woman who traumatized her hip bone in the cause of running from the invading military men, she was incapacitated. Succor came her way when our team visited the community with foods and medications.The elderly woman was then referred to see an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation.
  • A nine month pregnant woman who collapsed at home on account of self-medications. She was immediately managed by our gynecologist who administered the requisite antimalarial having discarded the self-administered medication the woman was on.
  • Over 300 children benefitted from the deworming exercise.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers were presented with long lasting insecticide treated nets.
  • A 64 year old woman who presented with six week history of bleeding per vagina secondary to fall during the military invasion of kurutie community. The bleeding was immediately arrested by our consultant Gynaecologist.

CONCLUSION

This project rekindled the faith of members of the community in the federal government of Nigeria and the NDDC as the people were overwhelmed by the prompt response of NDDC to their plight.
